Photography Class

Today was a real treat.  I was invited to be a driver on our students' senior photography trip to Dunedin. 

First stop was the tropical butterfly house at Dunedin Museum.  What an amazing place!  The butterflies were just incredible!  This one landed on my camera and it took me a while to encourage it off, then it came back and landed on my hand.  When its wings were spread it was probably twice the width of my hand.  The outside wings are  beautifully patterned in browns and creams, and the inside are that unbelievable vibrant blue.

What we hadn't taken into account was the struggles those of us with dslr's would have.  It's over 30 degrees in there so humidity was extremely high and out cameras all fogged up - and because dslr's are un-sealed we had some real problems.  We had to use some pretty wacky settings to get anything other than misty blurrs.  Which explains why this is fuzzy - it is in focus just taken with a steamed up lens.  

Those with sealed cameras got far better shots than the rest of us.

This is taken at full arm stretch - even with my macro I couldn't get far enough back (it is so big).

I could have spent all day there - and I'll definitely be going back if I ever get a sealed camera!
