Daily Record Building

Another beautiful day in Glasgow, so I headed down to Renfield Lane to try and get some shots of the former print works of the Daily Record Building. The building is hidden away in a narrow lane that is only 18ft wide and the site is enclosed on three sides by very high buildings and is in permanent shadow.

Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Daily Record Building was erected between 1901 and 1904. It is an interesting example of how Mackintosh handled an awkward elevation problem. Even in this narrow lane you can still appreciate the beauty of the facade, with its white glazed bricks, decorated with green bricks and topped with red triangles, creating the effect of stylised trees.

Currently the ground floor is occupied by Stereo, a cafe-bar and music venue.
