These (sandals) were made for walking
And that's just what I've done - walked the legs off myself today. I have been mostly in and around Piazza San Marco. I've seen the basilica, the doge's palace (some place, that - artwork and murals on every wall and ceiling, it's impossible to take it all in) and the view from the top of the clock tower (there's a lift, thank god!).
Walked round the little shops - more glass and masks! - and bought a sheet of the most exquisite handmade paper. I think I can safely say that I've never spent so much on a sheet of paper in my life before, and if dad was still with us he'd have fallen into a dead faint at the price... I love it though so it's worth every penny.
Heading to Roma tomorrow on the 9.30 train, so it's arrivederci Venezia. Things I'm left wondering are:
- do young men dream of owning their own boat instead of a car?
- is boat ownership the norm?
- how do venetians stand all the tourists??
- I've seen a few people in wheelchairs - how do they manage? Bridges everywhere and every bridge has steps...
Answers on a postcard please. Talking of which...
