St Michael's Church, Beccles

Yesterday I said we hoped to climb the 16th Century belltower of St Michael's Church in Beccles this morning, but it wasn't open so we couldn't! We did however find out why the belltower is a separate building - it was built after the church and couldn't be built safely on the (usual) west end of the church as it was too near the cliffside. Also, it was due to have a spire but cash ran out when Henry VIIIth started the Protestant Revolution, and suppressed Roman Catholic institutions - indeed they had to sell a lot of the church silver to be able to finish the tower at all!
 
So we went inside the church instead. The main blip is looking up the church towards the altar; the extras show the main stained glass window, some of the lovely detail of the altar rail, and one of the choir-stall pew ends with a carving of the Angel of Matthew.
