MYSTERY OBJECT

We saw this complex metal thing in the mud and gravel on the riverbank.  I have no clue as to its identity or origin. My clever husband suggested it could be the manifold  of an engine with several cylinders, probably from a boat.  What do you think? If I could have carried it - and was given permission - I could have made it into garden ornament, maybe growing something in it.  Pity!
