A Real Flash from the Past!

Dear Diary,

Summer time in my teen years was marked by Saturday nights at the drive-in theater.  They are such an icon of the 1950's and 60's here in New England.  You could bring a large bowl of home popped corn and meet up with friends.  It was such a wonderful memory of my youth.

Now, there are only 19 drive-ins in New England and Maine as the most at 6.  This one is very near my home.  It first opened in 1957 but how long it will keep showing films is hard to say.  The movie industry is phasing out 35mm films in favor of all digital and the cost to convert is $70,000 so whether these small operations will be able to afford the conversion is questionable.

I hope that some of these icons from the past will survive if for nothing else than to remind us of a time before corporate America took over everything.  When a family could put the kids into their pajamas, pop some corn, and go out for an evening without having to take out a bank loan.  That is something that is worth preserving.
