North Hill in the Sun

Took a drive up here after work to enjoy the gorgeous views looking East over Exmoor and towards the Quantocks.

Not a cloud to be seen - great way to unwind :-)

The Conygar Tower seen on the right hand side atop a small hill, is a folly built as a landmark for shipping in 1775. In the 16th century the sea came up to Conygar hill, near Dunster which had a harbour, and Minehead bay was a forest. Conygar Hill designed as a 'pleasure ground', and as well as the tower there would have been rustic seats at strategic viewpoints, 'ruined' arches, a summer house and a statue of Neptune that could be seen from the sea.

The current Bristol channel can be seen on the left hand side of the frame opposite the tower, showing a large amount of gradually reclaimed land - Dunster Marsh, and the West Somerset Steam Railway track running through it into the distance.
