Highland cattle

I photographed this handsome beast - a Highland cow - at Baylham House Rare Breeds farm, Ipswich, where it makes an interesting addition to the rare pigs, sheep and other animals, some of which are on the endangered species list, at this working livestock farm and visitor centre in the Suffolk countryside.

Although though not strictly rare, Highland cattle are far from common in the English countryside, and in spite of their appearance are very gentle and their thick coats enable them to survive well outside in the winter.  They also produce excellent beef but are slow to mature
