A visit to Peterhead

Today Mrs T's mum, had she lived, would have been 100 years old and so we headed off to Peterhead to put carnations on her grave.

Then off to the harbour to take a few photographs. The main photograph involves the Clasina a beam-trawler from Grimsby.  A beam trawl consists of a cone-shaped net ending in a bag or cod-end, which retains the catch. In beam trawls the horizontal opening of the net is provided by a beam, made of wood or metal, which is up to 12 m long; his is what you can see in the photograph.  While fishing for flatfish the beam trawl is often equipped with chains, known as ticklers, to disturb the fish from the seabed. 

The "extra" is of the Mtr Rokur, a stern trawler from the Faroes Islands, which is currently undergoing a thorough sand blasting and painting in the shipyard. Despite appearances the trawler isn't sinking; it has been tipped to one side to facilitate the painting of the boat's sides.
