A sea of gold
Another afternoon spent in a wood, but this time I was just providing the transport and had the luxury of wandering around Gamlingay Wood while Pete and Chris worked. I know Gamlingay Wood well, having surveyed it in 2013 and 2014, and it was interesting to see how it has changed since that time. All the usual woodland flowers were there, including some rather late flowering Oxlips (see extra), which are a rare species confined to the ancient Boulder Clay woodlands of East Anglia. But I was rather taken by the intense colour of the sporophytes of the Bank Haircap moss, which grows profusely in a glade over one of the more acid sand-lenses in the wood.
