Fezt to 300
300 today!
Thanks to everyone who's commented and subscribed, I'm learning a lot about photography through blipping, your comments, and your snazzy photos. Here's to many more.
This is a tannery in Fez, which is the oldest and largest in the world. Tourists are given a sprig of mint to cover the stench, which comes from the various types of faecal matter (pigeon poo is especially popular) used to soften the skins. The limestone pits are used for this, and skins are crushed underfoot for around three days, after which they are sold or moved into the dye pits. Then coloured leather is skillfully stitched up into a panoply of jackets, bags, poufs, and shoes. Didn't buy anything (I'm veggie), but found the sights and the smells fascinating. Also looked around the rest of Fez medina (also the oldest and largest in the world), and saw a huge amount of carpentry, loomwork, silverware and food. Even tried on a Fez.
Bye Barbara
