The Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux
Another day exploring old haunts. I hadn't been here since I was taken, as a child in the 1960s, to visit the Isaac Newton Telescope that was then installed in a dome close to the Castle at Herstmonceux that was then the headquarters of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The domes of the 'Equatorial Group' shown here - a few hundred metres away - were then strictly 'off limits' to the casual visitor.
Times have changed: the INT is now at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canaries; the RGO was disbanded as a scientific institution in 1998, and the domes of the former 'Equatorial Group' now welcome visitors in the guise of the Observatory Science Centre.
A fascinating first visit to the OSC - one that I plan to repeat with more time to spare than the 2 hours I was able to spend there today.
