The Kurhaus

The Kurhaus has been on my shortlist for some time now, but every time I wanted to shoot it there was a minor problem. 
Either there were to many tourists on the square, loading or unloading trucks, lousy weather etc etc.

Finally I had it all come together when the square was used for an advertising commercial for Tesla Cars as you can see. I also made the shot without the car as I intended to shoot it, but felt it would be nice to feature this version today! (Color version in the extra)

The Kurhaus Hotel was built between 1884 and 1885 by the German architects Johann Friedrich Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert.
It consisted originally of a concert hall and a hotel with 120 rooms. Having suffered serious damage by fire, it was rebuilt between 1886 and 1887. The ceilings were painted by the Brussels artist Van Hoeck and his large workshop. Several kings and heads of state sojourned in the Kurhaus during its heyday. Until the 1960s, the Kurhaus remained an attraction to the public via the many performances by top artists. The last performance in the Kurhauszaal was by the Rolling Stones on 8 August 1964, who had to flee the building in which became their shortest performance ever (less than one song).

Fallen into disrepair and closed in 1969, the Kurhaus was saved from demolition in 1975 by being listed as a historic building, and completely renovated. It was reopened in 1979 by Princess Beatrix.
