A new one!

As we were in Carlisle today, I decided I just could not resist searching out this . . . a new lonning. This is the gate that leads onto a short path between some modern housing estates - Engine Lonning. Not only is it a new lonning, it may well be the only lonning with a website. The rather fine ironwork gate is a wonderful optical illusion, which would of course have been a lot more effective if I had angled the shot a little better!
 
The lonning was created to give access to a huge area of land that was, until 1966, a heavy industrial railway station, with all the sidings and buildings that were found in such a place.  Now it is reclaimed wasteland, with a nature reserve and a web of woodland and grassy footpaths. Everywhere, sometimes hidden in the undergrowth, there is evidence of the railway past.
 
Some of the paths lead, once again, to the banks of the River Eden and actually to a rather fine viaduct (see extra), now derelict and closed off. There has been a lot of pressure over the years, from locals and walkers, to get the viaduct open for pedestrians and one can see how this would further enhance the access to the countryside round here. Whether this will happen or not is still in the balance.
