Rockingham Castle and Richard III

An amazing day out, thanks to the local branch of NADFAS.

We went first to the Richard III visitor centre in the middle of Leicester. As you will remember, the much maligned king was discovered a few years ago, in a grave under a car park. An amazing story of how he was found, by means of great research, huge commitment and luck or fate, depending on your viewpoint, was the subject of a tv documentary "The King in the Car Park".  The exact location and the position of the body are marked, using  modern technology, in part of the centre (extra photo)

The Visitors Centre is excellent, documenting Richard's life and the story of the discovery.

Richard was formally reinterred in Leicester Cathedral (the gravestone is one of the extra photos.)

From there, we headed for Rockingham Castle - a wonderful ancient castle that has been around for 900 years and in the hands of the same family for 450 of those.

My blip is the view from the highest tower of the castle, looking down on the mixture of ancient buildings and across the land below the high location where the castle was built. Well worth a visit
