Skull and crossbones.

Returned to Cartmel Priory. There are a number of gravestones, with skull and crossbones motifs, on the floor inside the priory. Both fascinating and macabre, it is thought to relate to the crusaders who, if killed in battle, would have only their skill and thigh bones returned to England. The hourglass is symbolic of the fleeting passing of time.
