Cartmel is a lovely village dating from the 16thC. Despite its diminutive size, it is famous, not only for its famous priory, but also for its racecourse and, more recently, for the restaurant L'Enclume which was opened by chef Simon Rogan in 2003 and has been awarded 2 Michelin stars and been voted the best restaurant in the UK.
