Yellow-eyed penguin
We had a great day travelling round the beautiful Otago Peninsula.
We attempted a walk on Sandfly Beach but as the sand was really flying I decided to retreat in case I got any in my contact lens - I'm being really careful after getting the eye ulcer in January. We watched the Royal Albatrosses gliding out at sea, then visited Penguin Place which is engaged in conservation. They are very concerned about the declining numbers of these already rare penguins. The decline could be due to climate change, predators or something else. But the numbers went down 50% in a year so there's only a few hundred left.
