Cockles
- The ones we have in NZ are found nowhere else in the world, although they are closely related to other species known as clams
- They are found in estuaries, mudflats and intertidal beaches around NZ
- NZ cockles are considered an important food source for many fish, crabs and seabirds
- Cockles can live to be about 25 years old, maturing between two and seven years
