Rievaulx Abbey (1132)
The forecast was once again poor. We headed over the North York Moors to Whitby. The wildness of the moors was something I wasn't quite expecting but we soon rolled down the very steep bank at Sleights to Whitby. On the beach at Saltwick Bay, we collected a grand supply of fossils before heading to the Captain Cook museum in the town.
On the return, we trundled cross country through picturesque Helmsley then stopped at this abbey for a bit of peaceful pondering. The monks had chosen a beautiful location.
