Dancing polar bears!

This morning it was my turn to choose the activity so we headed to Amager Strandpark so I could do a Parkrun! The park runs are massive in the UK and I did my first one last summer. In fact hubby has done more than me and the kids have also done a junior Parkrun in the UK which they loved. It was just by chance last week that I was reading the weekly email and I checked to see what other countries they were in and saw that there were several in Denmark. So of course I just had to pack my running kit! 5km is too short for me but I won my last one so had to have a crack today. I ended up coming first female, coming 3rd overall and posted another sub 20min 5km. Not bad considering how ill I've been recently with bronchitis and the little training I've done. The kids were pretty oblivious to my race as they were having too much fun playing in the sand dunes and making friends with the children of other runners. We were all made to feel so welcome and were encouraged to stay and eat Danish pastries after the race!

From here we caught the train to Christianshavn for an explore. We decided to visit Our Saviour's Church as the serpentine spire of the church is popular to climb affording stunning views of the city. There were 400 steps to climb the 90 metre height with the last 150 wrapped around the outside of the tower (looking a bit like a helter shelter!). Definitely not for those with a fear of heights but Olivia was determined to get to the very stop and managed to squeeze her little bum on the very last step (the steps get narrower and narrower towards the top). Dex and Daddy didn't fare so well and decided to turn back although they were very close to reaching the top.

Once down we had a further explore of the area and visited Freetown Christiana, which a green and car-free neighbourhood. It was established in 1971 by a group of hippies and is now the home to around 1000 people who have chosen an alternative way of life. It was quite interesting as there were three rules we had to abide by when walking through:
1. Have fun.
2. Don't run (it makes people panic).
3. No photos of the actual residences.

Home for lunch and a rest and then it was Dexter's choice of activity. He chose Copenhagen zoo which was a great idea. We walked there from our apartment through the beautiful Frederiksberg park and saved ourselves a tonne of money again due to the Copenhagen card! We haven't paid for anything yet due to these cards as they seem to get you free entry into everything! The zoo was great and we particularly enjoyed the Arctic Circle part where the above photo was taken. It was just by chance that the polar bears seemed to be dancing on top of the tunnel.

A funny memory note for Dex: he claims that seals are his number one favourite animal and penguins are his sixth favourite. We and he are not too sure what comes in between - he is such a funny little creature!

From the zoo we headed to restaurant Klubben which was recommended to us by friends and has typical Danish food. It was lovely but I don't think we'll be eating out again as food really is expensive here! Good job we'd saved some money from those amazing cards. Perhaps that's why you get such a good deal with them!
