Aberporth and Family
Had a wonderful day today. Straight over to Aberporth after a great breakfast to spend a couple of hours with Aunt J and Cousin C. My aunt will be 89 this year and has more faculties and memories than I do! The last time I was here was in 1966 and I had forgotten about the wonderful view from the house across the bay. Such a shame that the weather had turned. We walked a little way along the cliff path before heading back to Cardigan to visit the castle in the afternoon.
Cardigan Castle has a medieval history but there is little left of that era to display. A wonderful eccentric was the last owner who having run out of money, lived many years in the kitchen alone with no electricity or water. Eventually ending her life in a care home (she had already ripped up several parquet floors to burn for a fire) the house was condemned until purchased by the people of the town in 2003. They received a grant for restoration and have done a wonderful job. We met three of the lovely ladies who volunteer and were happy to tell us all about their beloved castle. My aunt (having lived in the area since the early 1960s) had already filled us in on the strange stories of the last owner.
A light late lunch of real Welsh Rarebit (delicious and much better than the cheap English cheese on toast) and back to the Guest House for a Siesta!
Out for dinner this evening again with J and C and I am so pleased we did this trip. Would have liked a bit longer. Hoping that C and I have persuaded Aunt J that she should have a 'bit of a do' next year for her 90th. Would be lovely to meet up with everyone.
