Saltburn

Today we went to Saltburn, via a round-about route which took us through the villages along the Esk Valley, round three sides of local landmark Roseberry Topping, and across to the coast. I spent many happy days on the beach here as a child, and my picture is the view from the promenade down past the funicular cliff railway to the beach and pier. The pier used to be a lot longer; when opened in 1869 it was 1500 feet long although storm damage reduced that to 1250 feet in 1875. It was further reduced but when I used to go to Saltburn as a child it was still 1100 feet long. However, further storm damage in 1974 caused a reduction again to its present length of only 681 feet although there had been a move to demolish it altogether which thankfully was defeated.

After a bit of a walk around we continued down the coast road and back to Whitby for another late lunch in the Magpie Cafe. I think I'd better start a diet next week!
