Shetland Day 6
The day started bright and before setting out for the day I took a few views from the campsite which give a pretty good idea of the non-cliff coastal areas, including a field of buttercups.
We headed first to the west coast to look for whimbrel - successfully - and a walk to a deserted township, St Olafs church and Underhoull broch and Viking farm. Unfortunately, by the time we'd had our walk the mist was coming in again but we still carried on with our next plan which was to visit the Keen of Hamar. This is a weird place of mainly bare rock (apparently the earth's movements have, in effect, turned the layers upsidedown - all very complicated) with small rare plants growing. One of these is only found here and we were able to find some with the help of notices, as well as quite a number of other things. It was pretty bleak and cold but fascinating. Nearby is an old chromium mine with a restored horse-powered mill.
We also visited the Boat Haven, the history of Shetland fishing boats (the day before we went to the Heritage Centre) and warmed up with hot chocolate. Oh yes, we also went to the most northerly Post Office.
