Saigon
or Ho Chi Min City. Depending on where your loyalties and heart lie it would appear. The Government use only Ho Chi Min City, the locals use either (the shorter is easier to say and write, the longer pays tribute to the communist leader who helped defeat the Americans, the French and of course the South Vietnamese people who still live here).
Our flight from the north was quick and uncomplicated. Our hotel, large and well organised. Our rooms were penthouse suites on the top floor - a lucky upgrade we were told. Only the traffic outside on the streets gave cause for concern. We were told that Saigon has 12 million inhabitants and 8 million motorcycles. These figures may not be an exaggeration if what passes our door is a representative sample. If crossing the street in Hanoi was difficult, here it is dangerous. Luckily there are pedestrian crossings and some drivers do stop when they change colour. Unfortunately not all do...
For a late lunch we headed to the Hard Rock Cafe to satisfy Dave's Burger craving and my fridge magnet bottle opener craving. By the time we managed to negotiate our way back to the hotel, we were happy not to venture out for another meal, but rather satisfied Margie's recently adopted craving for going for a run, by heading for the hotel gym, and later, spent the evening with drinks and nibbles in our room with a view - over the roof tops of Saigon.
