Ullswater Flood Damage.
After doing a couple of jobs at the Lodge, Clickychick and I decided to carry on towards Pooley Bridge and see how things were coming along with the temporary bridge. Work continues well and it is hoped the bridge will be open by Easter certainly it was taking the weight of a loaded lorry when we were there.
After adding a little cash into the coffers of the hard pressed businesses we decided to have a stroll along the lake shore towards Eusemere. I got lots of shots of lovely snowy fells and quite a few of the flood damage.
These walls run down into the lake from a boat house. Going by the "tide mark" behind us t have been just about level with the top of the walls. The river is a couple of hundred yards to the right of the picture so the water must have been beginning to pick up speed. As you can see the walls are substantial and have at some time been extended upwards encasing iron railings. In spite of this you can see the damage to the upstream wall.
Another sad sight was the first bungalow on the river. At first I couldn't understand why its windows were boarded when all the others weren't. On closer inspection it was because the outer leaf of the wall had been washed away taking the window frames with it. See the extra photo.
