Eureka!
What is it to have friends who are as daft enthusiastic as me and who can think of no better way to spend a day than grubbing around the undergrowth looking for long forgotten holy wells!
What a fabulous day! Crisp and frosty, fuelled by strong coffee, we headed east towards Timoleague. We managed to take in:
* two standing stones (one colossal) and a stone anomaly in a field
* a beautifully kept much visited holy well dedicated to the BVM
* the most incredible 19C church completely covered in wondrous mosaics (see extra), the making of which was funded by a Maharajah
* a huge ruined abbey right on the sea
* a tiny wart well
* a beehive shaped well, completely waterlogged and dedicated to the Trinity, complete with 3 niches, only one occupied
* an extremely bright Telefon box
* an Italianate church complete with clock which had a bullet hole in it acquired during an ambush (not recent)
* a whale skeleton
and the piece de resistance, this teeny well lurking by the side of a bridge. Armed with Himself's GPS we looked hither and thither for signs of it and were just leaving when Finola spotted a damp area! We scrabbled and scratched an lo and behold this very beautifully made little well, complete with lovely clear water appeared from the briars. It is a Tobar na Súl, an eye well but not much visited these days.
We also managed to stop for a really delicious lunch in the Monk's Lane and I had a glass of wine - in the daytime! A great day. Thank you Robert for all the driving. I think I need another glass now!
