Juxtapositions
This is a little obvious for a Mono Monday challenge around the theme of ancestors, perhaps.
It is Weaste Cemetery in Salford, and lies just north of Media City. It is the wood you can see from the multi-storey car park there - a green oasis particularly when the trees are in leaf. Desolate on a grey day though. It would be good to create a link from Media City to here, as it is the largest open space in this part of the City and much underused.
The cemetery has lots of history, and is listed. Salford's first MP Joseph Brotherton campaigned for its creation, and was the first person to be buried here. There were three chapels once - one each for CoE, RC's and dissenters, all now gone because of the cost of maintenance. The Luftwaffe bombed it as they missed the nearby docks, leaving the odd crater or two.
Sir Charles Halle the founder of the orchestra is here, as is local hero Mark Addy, and very sadly a couple of the Manchester Utd team who were killed in the Munich Air Disaster on February 6th 1958 (Eddy Coleman's headstone has flowers by it). There are lots of stone angels and exotic gothic detail in "rich man's plot", and serried ranks of headstones where the poor were buried. The juxtaposition with the Quays to the south, and the industry which lies either side, is striking.
