Courting Candle and Wine

The courting candle has a wooden base inside the spiral so the candle can rest on the base and be moved up or down by the little knob on the side of the wooden base.  In older days, when a fellow came courting, the parents could put a candle in the holder, tell the daughter and suitor they could "court" until the candle burned to below the top spiral.  The height of the candle could be adjusted by the daughter or parents depending on the desirability of the suitor.  The wine is my glass for the evening, but I doubt it would have been paired with a courting candle in the old days.  If you try it in large, you can see the details of the candle adjustment more clearly.
