An Island of Two Halves

Snow on the hills to the north of Madeira, and sun sparkling on the sea to the south of Funchal. You don't see many boats around during the week, but on Saturdays they seem to come out to play.

The weather picked up again today, though the wind felt chilly out of the sun. This evening we enjoyed an Opera Gala presented by the superb Orchestra Clássica da Madeira, with guest soloist, Elisabete Matos. I've never been to an opera, but it was amazing to experience live the sheer volume and range of voice coming from one woman. Very emotional performances they were, too. Highly impressive, but .... I enjoyed the orchestral pieces more than the vocal parts of the programme.
