Melville Monument

While crossing St Andrew's Square today, I was enjoying the sight of the Melville Monument. I couldn't help wondering what it must be like up there with only a passing bird for company. I presume the height of the column was to do with respect and power, it is 42metres high.
I can't help feeling it would have been nicer for those of us in later generations to see his face though.
