Historic Mill

Adluh Flour Mills produces flour and cornmeal products in a plant that is listed on the National Register of Historic Properties. In 1942 there were 42 operating mills located in South Carolina. Today only one of these remains - Adluh Flour Mills in Columbia. Adluh Flour Mills began in Columbia, SC around 1900.  It was purchased by the Allen family in 1926, and they still operate the mill.  That family had been operating mills in North Carolina since the early 1800's, and they bought this one in 1926 when it was in foreclosure.  It is located in downtown Columbia, the capital of South Carolina.  We stopped off there to see a grandson's basketball game, but during the day visited the mill and bought some grits as well as pancake/waffle mix.  I had eaten their grits several years ago in an Asheville, NC restaurant.  They are so good I wanted another bag.  This is the second time we have bought directly from the mill.  They do not sell in stores, but through distributors to eating establishments.  The items on the top of the building are metal letters that spell AdIuh Flour.  I am behind on posts and comments due to a short trip, so this is the photo I took for Tuesday.  I'll try to get back on schedule today.
