Time for Plan B
My first day out with TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) was supposed to consist of coppicing work in Petersham Lodge Woods. This was clearly a non-starter as the woods looked more like the Everglades without the 'gators. Instead we were put to work clearing dead and unwanted trees along the river frontage, which ironically was somewhat drier than the woods. There is nothing quite like six hours of sawing, lopping and dragging trees to make you realise how monstrously unfit you have become - I hurt a bit now and I'm sure it will be worse in the morning. Still, no pain no gain and all that old nonsense and I intend to be back for another go next week - although I might take waders and a wetsuit just in case!
