Choose Your House And The Temperance...

I've walked past this painted sign (one street down from my rented weeknight flat) eight times a week for about five months and decided to find out what the heck it means. After a spot of light googling I discovered that this is what remains of an old advertisement for the Temperance Permanent Building Society, whose slogan was "Choose Your House And The Temperance Permanent Building Society Will Help You To Buy It" (snappy!)

As its name suggests, the society was based on the principles of the Temperance (i.e. teetotal) movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. I'm not sure they'd have given me a mortgage... ;-)
