Three arches

Following German class I take a slightly different route home which takes me along the main street for a few hundred metres more. The village tower (with its own dungeon) is adjoined to the prominent Bishop's house by these three arches. However, I remain puzzled as to their practical purpose, but maybe the statement was enough in those days.
