Ancient oak

This is one of the ancient Cadzow Oaks, believed to date from the reign of King David I (1124 - 1153) , which would rank them among the oldest broadleaved trees in Scotland. The individual trees have contorted trunks and branches which are home to a collection of somewhat rare insects. This one sits near the Iron Age Earthworks. Needless to say it all was very muddy today.
