July spawned a monster

Look at this. Do you know what it is? In Newark they're called 'July bugs'. They're some sort of beetle, I think. They come with a sticky coating which you really don't want to get stuck in your hair.
They're called 'July bugs' because they only appear in, you've guessed it, July. They're normally to be seen flying in swarms over poplar trees on warm July evenings. I think they may be called other things in other parts of the country as they appear at different times of the summer.
Anyway, they're evil and must be destroyed. This one was despatched with the back of my slipper on the living room rug. Think it must have come down the chimney...
