Cassettes (Wednesday 13th January 2016)

Somewhere in the house I own a key fob in the shape of a miniature Maxell cassette that holds a small pencil. I have been ransacking the house since Christmas trying to find it to add to this still-life. Every drawer, flat surface, cupboard recess and box has been explored. Perhaps it will turn up now that I have gone ahead without it.

As well as the two sealed cassettes and the drawing are two non-cassette objects: 'Party Mix' is actually a metal tin containing mints that I was given at Christmas, whilst the Maxell UDI 90 below it is really a pack of post-it notes.

Mick Ronson - White Light/White Heat (1975)
Mick Ronson (vocals, guitar, piano), Trevor Bolder (bass guitar), Mike Garson (piano), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), David Bowie (backing vocals)
Mick Ronson was of course one of the Spiders From Mars and continued to work with David Bowie when that project ended. Bowie was a huge fan of the Velvet Underground and had been performing this Lou Reed song live with various bands and line-ups regularly throughout his career, though he never released a studio version of it, the closest being a session recording for John Peel's Top Gear programme. A live version from the Spiders From Mars 'farewell' concert at Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973 was also released.
Bowie had recorded it, also in July 1973, during the Pin-Ups album sessions, possibly intended for the sequel album of American cover versions that never materialised, but donated the backing track to Mick Ronson who used it on this, from his second solo album, Play Don't Worry.
