Makahu Tunnel, Taranaki

A detour on our travels today, off the Forgotten Highway (from Taumaranui to Whangamomona) included using this tunnel, which I used to travel through regularly when I lived in this part of the world. It's a well constructed tunnel, and has had major repairs done to it over the years, since it was first built in 1907. 

The timber lining had decayed by 1919 and was replaced by the present concrete pillars. In the major upgrade of 1998, the floor was lowered to allow stock trucks to access Makahu and Puniwhakau (where I lived) through the tunnel. It also allows access to the Te Wera Forest, Aotuhia Station, the 'Bridge to Somewhere' and a large proportion of the Whanganui National Park, including the Matemateaonga Walkway. There was (and still is) only one farm between where I lived and the Whanganui River. It's a remote part of New Zealand, and some of the farm blocks are hard work.
The end of the day included a visit to some friends who used to live in Makahu when I did, and who now live in south Taranaki, in full view of Mt. Taranaki. 
Regarding the 'episode' with the drunken driver yesterday, the plan is to take the photos to the police. As one of you commented, maybe the vehicle was stolen. Thanks for all the caring comments - that was much appreciated. It certainly was a scarey episode and one I hope is never repeated!
