Abstract smiley faces

You may see something different, but I see two smiley cartoon faces sharing a communal eye. Any idea what this tweaked version of an everyday object is?

This afternoon friend Alison and I took a step closer to our forthcoming holiday by ordering a Post Office Travel Money card each, which seems to be a safe and convenient way to pay for things abroad without incurring excessive charges. Apparently.
