The Last Enemy

A lovely elderly lady was telling me today about a plane that crashed in front of my cottage in 1943. Apparently there was a memorial to the pilots nearby so I set out to find it this afternoon.

The inscription reads:

Near here and very early on 8th January 1943 Flight Lieutenant Richard Hope Hillary RAFVR and Sergeant Kenneth Wilfrid Young Fison RAFVR were killed when their Blenheim V crashed at Crunklaw.

Richard Hillary wrote a book earlier about his experiences flying Spitfires in the Battle Of Britain, entitled The Last Enemy.

Which, if you know your Corinthians, refers to Death.

Rather ironic that two Tornado jets have collided and crashed over the Moray Firth. Let's hope they find the two missing crewmen.
