Carried away by a moonlight marrow
(seedling)
Okay, so it wasn't moonlight - there are too many clouds.
And I wasn't exactly carried away either. But I was very pleased to see my marrows are sprouting. It's been a mad rush to get a few summer/Autumn veg growing before it's too late. And every little miracle makes me clap as if a magician has pulled a rabbit out of a hat and sigh as if someone has just announced a new baby.
We first grew veggies nearly 20 years ago when I was in my early twenties but we'd taken over the garden from someone else and it felt more like caretaking so we weren't very adventurous. Then with children and moving repeatedly and the shop and my studying we stopped doing anything that required commitment in the garden.
Now I am sick of supermarket packaging and flown-in, out-of-season veg and paying a fortune for tomatoes so we're more than ready to grow-our-own.
We have our greenhouse in situ (just). By the time the man putting it together had finished it was 9pm tonight and, after the rain we've had recently, the place was a mud bath. I wanted to christen it somehow but the space around it is mush.
I'm laughing at myself getting boring as I get older, but not actually finding any of it boring. I seem to be getting an older body and older tastes but still have the same spirit so it feels a bit like a game, this getting older thing.
It's nice really.
