Ubiquitous Pomegranite.
This is a back blip.
Travelled all day; first along the north (European coast) of the Sea of Marmara to the Gallipoli peninsular where we took a ferry across the Dardanelle Straight to the Asian side of Turkey.
The crossing was very pleasant and we spent it on deck trying to avoid the perfume sellers!
Yes those names are familiar and later we could see the huge monument commemorating the dead from the First World War as we headed down the Agean coast. (Known as the Anotolian coast)
Our main stop was Troy the site of Homer's Illiad but also a real ancient site of at least 9 eras of buildings/cities from the first era to Roman. These were discovered by a German archaeologist who squirrelled away treasure from the site back to Germany. These were confiscated by the Russians after the Second World War and are still in their possession.
It used to be a major port built on a hill but the sea is now just visible in the far distance.
There is a rather fanciful reproduction of the Trojan Horse in the entrance area that you can climb up into (see extra), you could also dress up as a gladiator if it took your fancy!
I chose this colourful shot of pomegranates being made into juice as it was the first place we came across them but soon discovered that even the smallest cafe would prepare you fresh pomegranate juice. They even make a salad dressing from it which we were offered at one lunch stop.
See them growing here: https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2118821533970334195/gallery/2118826018331430047
