St Andrew's day flowers

Every year on St Andrew's Day our Gardens department asks us to list all the plants we can find in flower. It's always more than I think and many of them are just odd flowers hanging in there, but a flower is a flower for a' that!

Most years the list contains a majority of regulars, sometimes some surprises, sometimes some disappointments. This year was maybe not as good but still quite impressive.

The flower in my picture is a spiky Chilean bromeliad, Fascicularia bicolor, and is still looking fresh. The leaves turn red around the flower when it's in bloom to attract the pollinators - humming birds maybe. I see there's a slug on this one which I didn't notice until I downloaded the picture.
