Victoria Embankment - construction started in 1865 and was completed in 1870. The original impetus was the need to provide London with a modern sewerage system. Another major consideration was the relief of congestion on the Strand and Fleet Street.

The thing that made me smile: I met a 14 week border terrier called Maggie as I walked up the road from the train station. I bent down to talk to her and she snuggled down on my lap. She was lovely
