Face lift

It rained hard in the night and one could only pray that it wasn't falling as heavily on the huge swath of land affected by the horrific dam bursts on Thursday. Two out of three dams full of mining waste burst, wiping out part of a historic town and spreading viscous, treacherous mud. So far, only two deaths have been confirmed - one body found 100 km downstream, but many people are missing. Supposedly, the dams had been declared in good condition by the environmental agency, but one has to wonder whether money changed hands. Apart from the fact that many survivors have lost everything, including their livelihoods, there are fears that the land affected will be sterile and never recover.

A very early start for me this morning, while HH slumbered on, but at least I got all the way through the main part of the paper before he came down. Since then, apart from a trip to the market and the supermarket, mainly for both of us to get some exercise, we’ve been trying to catch up with our tails.

Never having had much exposure to Italian food, I've discovered a penchant for thin crust pizza, and can get through an amazing amount of it. Could, that is, at a place down the road that served as much, sweet and savoury, as one could eat – and where there was also a buffet for HH, who can’t eat gluten. However, it changed hands recently and has just reopened with a brand new look and menu. Previously all black and red, it’s now bright and colourful and yes, those are bananas hanging on the walls. Digitaldaze and Barrioboy are in for a surprise when they visit next month. The good news is that they do serve pizza after 6 p.m. and although it isn’t yet, it will be on an ‘as much as you can eat’ basis again. Phew. I need that occasional dose of comfort food.
