My alternative diary

Remembrance Sunday

Today is a day to remember my Uncle Peter who knew me but sadly, I not him. I was only 22 months old when he died. My blip is of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission certificate locating his memorial.
His ship HMS Exmoor “was deployed with Shearwater to escort a convoy from the Thames estuary to Methil. The convoy was attacked by E-boats as it passed off Lowestoft on 25th  February. Exmoor suffered an explosion aft, suffering major structural damage and rupturing a fuel supply line. A fire soon broke out which spread rapidly. Exmoor capsized and sank in ten minutes. Exmoor had either been hit by the E-Boat S30 commanded by Klaus Feldt, as the Germans claimed, or had struck a mine”.

I find it really sad that we will never know for sure if he died as a result of hitting one of our own defensive mines or a a result of enemy action.
