Field of Gold
Today was our first hike, and the route from Zegache to Ocotlán, we passed through a part of a giant agricultural valley. Farmers grow cabbages, onions, radishes, spinach, beans, lettuce, squash, tomatoes, and probably more. They also grow flowers for their special festivals and celebrations, and for the Day of the Dead, the flower of choice is marigold, paired with Cockscomb (Cresta de Gallo), the red you can see in the background.
When we got to the town of Ocotlán, we visited a cemetery where people were decorating the graves primarily with these two flowers, but with roses, gladiolas, lilies, and others mixed in. It's a sight to behold.
If you have never heard of Day of the Dead, look it up on the internet and learn about this most fascinating celebration, which is an attitude toward death that is different from what many people grow up with. I think it is quite healthy and joyful.
