Carn Brea Monument

After a great hotel breakfast I set off in heavy mist to find the monument I had seen as I approached Redruth the previous day. I first found the 14th Century Castle, first a chapel,  later a hunting lodge and now a restaurant. It sits upon granite boulders and I imagine it has an impressive view over the landscape! I then set off in the opposite direction to find the monument - a 27m Celtic Cross in the memory of Francis Basset, 1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset (1757–1835). Basset, a mine owner, gained his titles for erecting earthworks to defend Plymouth from combined French and Spanish fleets in 1779, and suppressing a miners' "food riot" in 1785.Along with others, he petitioned the House of Lords against slavery in 1828The monument was erected by public subscription in 1836. It loomed out of the mist suddenly - very impressive!
A glorious drive home through autumnal sunshine, and then the stomach pains kicked in and it was aspirin and sleep!
