Polite Notice

When I was in the UK I sometimes spotted signs with the words "Polite Notice." Whereas I guess this phrasing is a conventional way of mitigating the directness of a message and thus is not really worthy of careful consideration, I feel the choice of words to be strange: it feels like the producer is saying her own sign is polite.
